The sex offender registry is an important tool that tracks those convicted of sexual assault to keep the public safe. A 5 On Your Side six-month-long investigation uncovered a loophole that allows many accused rapists to evade the registry. https://www.news5cleveland.com/longform/evading-justice-how-some-accused-rapists-in-cuyahoga-county-avoid-the-sex-offender-registry

Since the registry is “regulatory,” then it is not possible to “evade justice,” as that implies a court-ordered PUNISHMENT. Just sayin’.
!. I’m sick and tired of being conflated with the individuals mentioned in that story.
2. The registry is not “justice.” It’s a PUNITIVE, revenge fantasy based safety illusion!

Dear Sarah Buduson,
I read the above references article and watched the videos with concern. Concern that you are continuing the myth that the sex offender registry provides safety for society against further sex crimes.
The sex offender registry DOES NOT make society any safer as 95% of new sex crimes ARE NOT committed by people on the registered sex offender list! That, in other words, means that people NOT on the list commit the new crimes. Those that are close in relationship to their victims commit the vast majority of sex crimes; teachers, parents, relatives, coaches, law enforcement, etc.
While your reporting shows that the justice system ALLOWS plea deals to an offense that doesn’t require the perpetrator to register on a sex offender list, it in no way supports any justification that the sex offense registry make society safer.
Sincerely,
[me]
It’s called a plea bargain. If that judge wants to ensure that the crime that the defendant is convicted of is “truthful”, then they need to get rid of mandatory minimum sentences and make any registration / other restrictions be part of an individual sentence. Without any kind of bargaining chip, the prosecutor has nothing to offer and the defendant may as well take his chances at trial. This is the only way to have due process and the truthful pleas.
